Otter Point

Otter Point is this nifty little place that gives you some great views from a bluff that is the actual Otter Point.     it is probably a good 100′-150′ above the sea with quite rugged cliffs that go straight down!     to the south is one long sweeping bay and to the north is a rock populated large cove.     to get to Otter Point you take the Old Coast Road juncture to the west from HWY 101 at one tenth of a mile south of mile marker 324.     the Old Coast Road is just that – the old original one lane road that use to be the only way to go north and south along the coast.     because it is such an old rural road, it is winds in and out from the ocean quite a ways at times in order to stay out of the ravines from the sometimes deep creeks that make their way to the ocean.     obviously, bridges and large culverts were not part of the construction mindset back when that road evolved.     anyway, once you leave the modern HWY 101, it is less than a half mile to the juncture for Otter Point which is well marked by a state park sign.     the little roadway to the parking area is complete with speed bumps, so don’t get in too big of a hurry.     once you park there is a path into the forest at the northeast corner of the parking area and at the southwest corner.     the one to the southwest has a “Y” in it soon after you start walking along it.     the “Y” to the left takes you down to the large beautiful bay that lies to the south of the bluff.     the “Y” to the right takes you out onto the bluff and is a very enjoyable experience.     the pathway that leads off to the northeast from the parking area takes you down to the Rock populated large cove.     that path can get a little steep in places.     furthermore, the downward nature of the path tends to compete a little with a spring which keeps the path a little slippery.     as well, at times the path is more like steps which can be a little risky because they are narrow and can descend a good foot or more.     what makes this somewhat risky is that if you hit the next step down and it is slippery because it is a little muddy, you could maybe land and not be able control yourself.     HOWEVER!   Not To Fear!     some caring person or persons has gone and securely tied a really Great rope to a tree for the last 150′ of this descent to the beach in order to allow you to control yourself with Great Ease.     the last two pics at the bottom of this page shows that rope.
